A lady from from Perth, Australia asked Dr. Oz her about her struggle with her weight. She doesn’t like to exercise much. She wanted to know about the exercise pill. Is it healthy, does it exist, and does it work?
Oprah said, if there was an exercise pill she would have had it and it would have become one of her favorite things.
Dr. Oz said that the study looked at mitochondria. People that exercise have lots of mitochondria that burn calories and those that do not exercise don’t have as much mitochondria.
Researchers developed a pill that they gave to rats and those that received the pills had better capability at exercising and were better at burning calories.
Dr. Oz thinks that there will be eventually pills that will work in humans. He did say that it would be much better if a person can exercise, to actually exercise.
This is a wild ride for sure. I first heard about the possibility of a new exercise pill on July 31st. By the next day August 1st, the excitement was all over the news media. It was on TV, in newspapers, health newsletters, Diet and exercise Blogs, and many other places.
I decided real quick to start a Blog to keep track of all of the discussions about these new drugs that I think people would want to know about.
Think about it, other than discovering the Fountain of Youth, what is the single most desired pill that could be invented? You probably guessed right. If it is at all possible to take a pill that would trick your body into thinking that it has been through a strenuous work out, without even having to do any physical exercise, well that would just be Nirvana.
Myself, I enjoy working out, as do many other millions of people. It gives me a chance to concentrate on me, my life and things I plan on doing. I do not have to worry about the daily pressures that we all have when I am exercising. I have a strong feeling that a lot of you are the same way.
Then let’s look at this another way. What if you had a physical impairment or a medical situation that would not allow you to work out? Well this could be one of the greatest medical break-throughs ever. There has been some serious discussion and analysis as to how these new drugs, AICAR and GW1516 might prove beneficial in cases of diabetes.
What if a person was obese and was not able to exercise? Wouldn’t it be great if they could achieve weight loss down to a point that their body would allow physical exercise? Think of the benefits to everyone!
I encourage all of you readers to subscribe to updates to this Blog and I promise to keep you advised of the breaking news as it happens.
Thanks for visiting, bookmark this site now and I’ll see you aging soon.

Scott Miller a well known personal trainer discusses the new exercise pill in his recent article.
Can you really get abs fast by taking a tablet? Recent news reports of the “exercise pill” seemed to raise hopes of being able to lose weight and burn fat without stepping foot in a gym or embarking on a restrictive diet.
Of course, there have been countless other pills to make weight loss claims, so is this one any different, or is it simply another flash in the pan?
So far the exercise pill is said to show tremendous promise, producing many of the exact same effects as rigorous exercise.

Not likely, but the above title is sort of a humorous comment in a very well written discussion of the exercise Pill that is in the news.
The young man, Alex DeLarge, that writes this column presents some very good data and facts around AICAR and the development of this drug for people that are not physically able to exercise.
Two types of muscle exist: Type 1 (slow-twitch) and Type 2 (fast-twitch). Type 1 burns more fat (oxidizes fatty acids), is more resistant to fatigue — due to an abundance of mitrochondria producing cellular energy — and increases with endurance training.
Type 2 muscle fibers contain fewer mitrochondria, fatigues more easily, burns glucose and is commonly found in obese and sedentary individuals.
Science Daily, among other sources provided, provides a digestible in-depth explanation of the way AICAR further works at the cellular and metabolic level to achieve increased muscle endurance.
I think that he makes good sense and think that we will be hearing more from him on this subject in the coming days.
Another clinical report on the Drug Discovery Opinionwebsite explains that
Exercise Pills have the potential to treat diseases such as diabetes, where exercise has been shown to be beneficial and to offer protection against obesity.
These drugs also have the more controversial potential to increase endurance in athletes.

The New York Times in a recent in-depth article reported quite a lot of good information regarding AICAR and GW1516, the new exercise pill drugs.
One point that was made is that the Olympic Drug Testing Committee would have a hard time locating these type of drugs in the athlete’s system, even though researchers at the Salk Institute claim that such a blood and urine test is available.
A quote from the NY Times: We all know the body can be improved. We all know Olympic athletes have the highest-functioning bodies in the world. They can call themselves natural, just as they used to call themselves amateurs, but at some point that claim may seem the most unnatural thing of all.
If you want to read this lengthy article you should check it out soon, as the NY Times does not leave their on-line public news articles up for too many days.

From the most recent news: Exercise In A Pill: Researchers Identify Drugs That Enhance Exercise Endurance
ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2008) — Trying to reap the health benefits of exercise? Forget treadmills and spin classes, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies may have found a way around the sweat and pain. They identified two signaling pathways that are activated in response to exercise and converge to dramatically increase endurance.
The team of scientists, led by Howard Hughes Medical Investigator Ronald M. Evans, Ph.D., a professor in the Salk Institute’s Gene Expression Laboratory report in the July 31 advance online edition of the journal Cell that simultaneously triggering both pathways with oral drugs turned laboratory mice into long-distance runners and conferred many of exercise’s other benefits.
